Orlando man scratches his way to $1 million

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 01:37 PM PDT

I get excited when I scratch off a ticket and win $100. I get elated when I scratch off a $500 winner. I go wild when I scratch off a $1,000 winner.

I can’t even imagine how Howard Earl Howell felt when he scratched of a Billion Dollar Blockbuster ticket and won $1 million.

The 44-year-old Orlando man bought his winning ticket at Prime Liquors, 5026 Seminole Pratt Whitney Road, Loxahatchee. He chose a one-time, lump-sum payment of $650,000.

Howell is the 37th player to claim a $1 million prize in the $20 scratch-off game. There are 83 $1 million prizes remaining.

The game also offers 10 prizes of $10 million and six of those remain.

To date, the game has awarded more than $320 million in prizes.

The Florida Lottery is kicking off a statewide Monopoly tour Saturday with a stop at the Florida Mall in Orlando. The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The tour is intended to generate excitement for the new Monopoly scratch-off tickets that were released Tuesday.

Monopoly tickets are available for $1, $2, $5, $10 and $20 and right now some stores are selling older versions of the tickets along with the newest versions. Losing Monopoly tickets can be entered into second-chance drawings for a chance to win Premier Edition Monopoly board games, cash and Florida vacation getaways provided by Visit Florida.

The Florida Lottery will be visiting select Simon Malls around the state, starting with the Florida Mall on Saturday.

At each event, players who purchase $10 or more worth of Monopoly scratch-off tickets will get a chance to play Monopoly on a life-sized game board where they will roll giant dice to move around the board for the opportunity to win great prizes.

The Florida Lottery will hold drawings for scratch-off tickets,  beach towels, tote bags, $100 Simon Mall gift cards and a Monopoly Wii game at each event. To register, players must purchase $10 or more in Monopoly scratch-off tickets to receive an entry form for the drawing, which will be held at the end of each event. Participants do not have to be present at the drawing to win.

Other stops on the tour are noon to 4 p.m. July 16 at the Tyrone Square mall in St. Petersburg, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 23  at the Miami International Mall in Miami, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 30 at the Cordova Mall in Pensacola and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 30 at the Sawgrass Mills mall in Sunrise.
