Ocala man benefits when raffle ticket expires

It’s one thing to miss a winning ticket when it’s a free Quick Pick.

It’s an entirely different matter to fork over $20 for a Florida Lottery raffle ticket and then not check it.

But that may have happened with one of the $700,000 winners in the Florida Lottery’s Lucky 7 Raffle.

Six of the big winners were redeemed. But a ticket bought at the Lottery’s district office in Tampa expired earlier this month.

The top-level prizes are guaranteed to be awarded, so the first ticket drawn as a $70,000 winner won the big prize.

That lucky person was Paul Poppenberg, 62, of Ocala.

In the drawing, held on May 5, 784 winning numbers were randomly selected. Tickets with the first seven numbers drawn were worth $700,000; tickets with the next seven numbers were worth $70,000; tickets with the next 70 numbers drawn were worth $700; and tickets with the final 700 numbers drawn were worth $70.

Players holding tickets with the winning numbers had 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim their prizes.

So did the ticket-holder forget to check his number? Maybe he accidently threw it away or left it in his pocket when he did the wash. Whatever the case, $700,000 took a trip from Tampa to Ocala.

11 Fantasy 5 winners on 11/11/2011

Did you notice that 11 tickets shared the Fantasy 5 jackpot Friday night — 11/11/2011?

Well, it happened, but it took a strange quirk to do it.

You see, five of the tickets were bought at the same 7-Eleven on North U.S. Highway 301 in Tampa. I have to assume that the same person is holding those tickets, which are worth $22,165.22 each.

The only other ticket for which the purchaser picked the numbers 17, 18, 19, 24 and 36 was bought in St. Petersburg.

Two winning Quick Picks were bought in Jacksonville and one each in Naples and North Miami Beach.

The other winning ticket was a free Quick Pick obtained in Miami.

Did you have trouble buying Lucky Lines this morning?

Glen, one of our blog regulars, emailed me to let me know he had trouble buy Lucky Lines tickets at two different stores this morning.

I checked with the Florida Lottery and spokeswoman Connie Barnes tells me there was a technical issue resulting in Lottery terminals not being able to sell or redeem tickets for Lucky Lines beginning about 6 a.m.

“As soon as we learned of the problem, we began working with our vendor to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, and were able to resume sales and redemption of Lucky Lines tickets by 10:19 a.m., slightly more than four hours later,” Barnes said.

It was the only game affected, she said.
