Wednesday night’s Powerball jackpot: $245,000,000

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 05:30 AM PDT

With an estimated jackpot of $245 million for Wednesday night, Powerball is going to attract folks who don’t usually play the game.

I have two pieces of advice.

First, buy your tickets early. There will be a mad dash to buy tickets on Wednesday.

Secondly, spend an extra dollar and buy Power Play.

You odds of winning that huge Powerball jackpot are about 1 in 195 million. You odds of matching the five white balls are 1 in 5 million.

Three tickets matched the five balls Saturday night to win $200,000. If they had bought Power Play, the tickets each would have won $1 million.

One player won $10,000 by matching for numbers and the Powerball. With Power Play he would have won $50,000.

While estimated at $203 million, Saturday night’s jackpot came in at $209.2 million.

Speaking of jackpots, the Florida Lottery has the largest jackpot of any state at a guaranteed $23 million for Wednesday night. The odds of winning that jackpot are about 1 in 22 million.

Lotto tickets can be purchased with Xtra to multiply smaller prizes and win a a minimum of $25 for matching 3 of 5 numbers.

Saturday night, 69 tickets matched 5 of 6 numbers. Just seven used Xtra to increase the prize from $3,844.50 to $11,873.50.

One more time: College Football Promotion voucher instructions

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 11:25 AM PDT

For the life of me, I can not figure out why so many people are having trouble entering their College Foodball Promotion vouchers.

The first thing you have to do is register. You can reach that page by clicking here.

Once you register, then your are registered for all future second-chance drawings, including those involving scratch-off games.

If you get to the registration page and you are already registered, there is a link on the right side of the page to log in.

You can also go to the Florida Lottery’s home page and near the bottom you will see “Second Chance.” Click on the small icon of the college you are choosing and it will bring up a large icon. Click on the large icon and it will lead you to a page to register or log in.

You get a voucher for spending at least $10 in a single Lotto play.

Powerball jackpot soars past $200 million

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 08:04 AM PDT

We’ve reached the magic number: $200 million.

That seems to be the figure that entices folks who don’t regularly play Powerball to try their luck.

The estimated jackpot for Saturday night’s drawing is $203 million. That is based on taking payments over 30 years. The estimated lump-sum payment is $123.2 million.

It is the fourth time this year the jackpot has topped $200 million and the seventh time since Florida joined the multi-state game in January 2009.

The largest jackpot Floridians have had a chance to win was when it reached $259.9 million on Aug. 19, 2009.

The largest jackpot in Powerball history was $365 million won by a group of ConAgra food workers in Nebraska on Feb. 18, 2006.

Powerball is played in 31 states, Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

While the Powerball jackpot gets all the attention attention, the Florida Lottery’s Lotto jackpot is a guaranteed $21 million, currently the highest of any state lottery.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are about 1 in 195 million. The odds of winning the Florida Lotto are about 1 in 22 million.

New lottery scratch-off really smells

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 12:56 PM PDT

Forget candy canes. I’m hanging lottery tickets on my Christmas tree this year.

The Florida Lottery launches four new tickets Tuesday and one of them is a $2 holiday ticket “Peppermint Payout.”

 This isn’t just any ticket. It’s a peppermint-scented ticket.

While some stores wait days to put out new scrach-off tickets, my friend Manjeet at the 7-Eleven at U.S. Highway 17-92 and Airport Boulevard in Sanford promises to have this and the other new tickets on sale at 6 a.m.

The $1 ticket is also holiday-themed, but there is also a $2 “Triple Your Money” and a $5 “Diamond 7s.”
