Huge Powerball jackpot fuels near-record lottery sales in Florida

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 12:27 PM PST

Thanks to the frenzy created by a record Powerball jackpot, lottery players in Florida shelled out more than $117 million last week to give the Florida Lottery its second best sales week ever.

Sales topped $131 million the week of Sept. 10, 1990, when the Florida Lotto was a record high $106 million.

There were 340,175 winning Powerball tickets sold in Florida, the highest number ever for a single Powerball drawing

The Florida Lottery has had the most winners of any state since joining the game in January 2009.

Powerball has generated more than $546 million for the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund.

The estimated jackpot was announced at $310 million on Thursday and increased to $325 on Friday. By the time ticket sales cut off Saturday night it was $336.4 million.

And while that is short of the record $365 million jackpot set in 2006, Saturday night's jackpot was a record.

You see, the lump sum payout for the $365 million jackpot in 2006 was about $177 million. The lump sum payout for Saturday night's winning ticket, sold in Rhode Island, was $210million.

The higher numbers are based on a 30-year payout.

By the way, Rhode Island sold 330,881 fewer winning Powerball tickets than Florida for Saturday night's drawing.

Also contributing to the huge sales week was the face that 20 different Florida Lottery scratch-off games exceeded $1 million in sales during the week.

Scratch-Off winner Nicholas Chadman poses with his girlfriend Kerri Welch and his daughters Brittany and MaKayla, after claiming his $1 million prize

I like Florida Lottery Black, the Lottery's $10 scratch-off game.

I have a feeling Nicholas Chadman of Palm Bay likes it more than I do.

Chadman, 33, bought one of the tickets at the Palm Bay Citgo, 894 Palm Bay Road Northeast, Palm Bay, and scratched off a $1 million winner.

He's the first player to claim one of the game's eight top prizes.

The game, which launched Jan. 10, offers more than $53 million in prizes, including more than 820,000 prizes ranging from $20 to $10,000. The overall odds of winning are one in 3.36.
